About the Project

Din Mhix Tazza—a nod to Magritte's The Treachery of Images—combined an exhibition and publication that captured personal stories from women in Bormla, each centered around objects in their homes that evoke vivid memories of their hometown, family, or childhood. This project was conceived by Virginia Monteforte in collaboration with Nathalie Grima, Sara Falconi, and myself. Curated by Raphael Vella, the exhibition featured works by artists Darren Tanti, Emanuel Bonnici, and Elisa von Brockdorff. The accompanying book, designed by Pierre Portelli, includes narratives from the women and translations by Claudia Gauci.

Artist Statement

In this artwork, the artist reimagines an intimate scene featuring his grandmother, Censina—a former seamstress from Bormla—sewing a dress for the Madonna. This imagined moment holds special meaning, as the Immaculate Conception is the pride and joy of Bormla. Though this event never occurred in reality, the artist seeks to immortalise a moment that lived deeply in his grandmother’s heart.
